Woes Interview

UK pop-punk band Woes from Scotland just dropped their new and exciting song ‘Money Shoe’ along with the announcement
of their debut album coming out just next month on June 28th.

On their recent single the band shows that their musical influences don’t only come from pop punk but other genres as well
such as R&B and even hip hop which means Money Shoe is unlike anything you’ve heard from Woes before.

While in Cologne, Rabea sat down with David Jess (DJ) after their set supporting Millencolin to talk about new music, wild tour stories and conspiracy theories once again.

R: So, the tour has just started. How has it been so far?

DJ: It’s been great! We’ve been playing better every day and obviously touring with Millencolin – who are just probably one of my favourite bands - is fucking amazing.

R: What are you most excited about this tour?

DJ: Honestly, just the chance to play with a band that I grew up listening to. I’m such a huge fan - me and Sean are both huge fans of Millencolin. We are just happy to be touring with one of the bands we idolised growing up.

R: You’ve been to Germany quite a few times now, are you planning on coming back headlining?

DJ: We are supposed to be coming back in August or September to do a headline tour!

R: Do you have any weird tour stories to tell?

DJ: We were on a night out in Amsterdam, drinking for hours and Ryan was just like jumping around, being an idiot. He’d done something to his back and he just couldn’t move and he had [to be] taken to the hospital but he was so drunk that when they told him he had to pay – cause obviously we don’t [need to] pay in the UK for the hospital – he just started shouting at the fucking nurses. They wouldn’t serve him, and he went away, laying there in pain. [Ryan] was in so much pain that he was crying and I had to go back to the nurses and ask “I’m really sorry about how he spoke to you earlier, he’s just actually very drunk and he’s not like that when he’s sober and he would like to pay and would you please see him?” and she was like “Go on then.” And then they gave him some morphine and he was dead happy.

R: Are there any conspiracies that you believe in?

DJ: It depends what you mean by conspiracy. We all believe in aliens, we don’t believe in ghosts, I don’t believe in any religion, I don’t believe in flat earth. I have my suspicions that 9/11 was an inside job, I don’t believe in the New World Order, nor do I believe in lizard people! So yeah, Aliens is the main thing that I believe in!

R: Your single ‘Suburbs’ came out recently. How have the fans been responding to it?

DJ: It’s been really good! Sean told me the other day that ‘Suburbs’ is his ninth favourite song on the album and I think it’s my fifth favourite song.

R: How many songs are there on the album?

DJ: Ten! Well, we were genuinely surprised because it wasn’t like the most immediate single for us but everybody obviously really, really liked it. We had other songs that we would’ve released first but we were convinced to release that one and turns out it was the right decision. But you know like, just hearing people like it and seeing people singing along at shows and stuff is cool!

R: Can you tell me anything about ‘Money Shoe’, the new song?

DJ: It’s my favourite song I’ve ever been a part of! Our manager Tom said it was the best song that he’d ever worked on.

R: Your new album is also on the way: is there anything you can tell me about it? What are your favourite songs apart from ‘Money Shoe’?

DJ: Yeah, our album is coming out on June 28th. I also really, really like “Fancy” and “Mess” - those are my favourite songs! Sean’s favourite song, I think, is “Fake Friends” or “Cross”. And Luke’s is “Gone Forever” and I’m not sure what Ryan’s favourite is, he hasn’t told me, I need to ask him. But everybody has different [ones].

R: What do you guys listen to on tour?

DJ: Pff, tons! I mean it depends, we’ve got different kinds of music for different moods. There’s a lot of Korn, a lot of Limp Bizkit. Me and Luke love Metallica! We’d quite happily listen to Metallica for hours on end. Me, Ryan and Sean are into trap so a lot of stuff like Lil Peep, Lil Aaron … those guys.

R (laughs): All the lil’s.

DJ (laughs): All the lil’s! All that kinda stuff and beyond that we just kind of listen to pop punk.

R: You actually listen to pop punk? I feel like most pop punk artists don’t listen to pop punk.

DJ: Yeah, doesn’t everybody listen to everything these days?! I feel like I listen to loads of kinds of music and everybody I know has got an eclectic music taste. But when I was like 14, I just remember people [being like] ‘I listen to Blink182 [and nothing else]’. I liked Millencolin and Lagwagon and NOFX and all that kind of stuff when I was that age, but now I think everybody just has a couple of favourite artists from every genre.

R: Last but not least, do you know any bad pick-up lines?

DJ: How much does a polar bear weigh?

R (laughs): I don’t know…?

DJ: Enough to break the ice – hi, I’m David Jess. [laughs].
